Gillian McCarthy smashed a two-run, game-ending double to help the Northfield softball team defeat Maryland 7-6 in the second day of pool play at the Senior League East Regional Tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts on Sunday.
Senior League softball is for players ages 13-16.
Northfield trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when their offense kicked into gear.
Savannah Robertson led off with a home run over the left-field wall. Shannon Bennett, Maggie Wilkinson, Faith Hegh each singled to load the bases. Gabby Monzo walked to force in a run, and Jessie Higbee hit an RBI single to make it a one-run game. McCarthy followed with her winning extra-base hit to left-center field.
"We feel great about how we've been able to response to adverse situations in these games," coach Mike Toner said. "It really shows the character of the girls, and how much they believe in each other, support each other and never give up."
Wilkinson was the winning pitcher. She struck out two in two innings.
McCarthy was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Hagh was 3 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Northfield (2-0) plays the Pennsylvania representative at 9 a.m. today.
